Preparing for colonoscopy

You should note that the “Standard Package of Colonoscopy Service" includes only one pre-procedural consultation. Hence, any subsequent pre-procedural consultation, no matter with the same CS or another CS, will not be subsidised by the Government. You will be required to pay for any fees out-of-pocket.

Rare but significant complications of colonoscopy may include:

  1. The use of sedation and pain killers may cause acute and unexpected heart or lung problems such as low blood pressure, breathing difficulties and suffocation.
  2. Perforation, bleeding or infection in the bowel arising from the colonoscopy procedure especially if a polyp has been removed.
Preparing for colonoscopy
You should prepare for the colonoscopy examination according to the instructions given by your CS. This will involve dietary restrictions and intake of some preparation to promote bowel opening.

It is important that your bowel is adequately cleaned to allow good visualisation during the procedure. Poor bowel preparation will result in faecal material obstructing a good view of the large bowel lining, and hence affecting the colonoscopy examination result.
